Discover the Canal du Midi

From Toulouse to the sea, the Canal du Midi crosses the Occitanie region from one end to the other. Created three and a half centuries ago as the first major canal with a watershed, the Canal du Midi is an engineering feat that blends seamlessly into the landscape. From lock to lock, from canal bridges to aqueducts, the Canal du Midi is also a highly aesthetic construction, designed by Vauban and other renowned engineers.

Along its 240 km route, the Canal du Midi splits in two in the Aude department: one side branch, known as the Canal de la Robine, reaches Port-la-Nouvelle via Narbonne, close to our campsite, while the other section runs towards the Etang de Thau.

Walking on the Canal du Midi

There’s nothing like a cruise on the Canal du Midi to appreciate its beauty and tranquility. You can rent a boat without a license or sign up for guided river trips, for example from the port of Le Somail in Saint-Nazaire-d’Aude.

Another option is to cycle or walk along the Canal du Midi, taking advantage of the beautiful towpaths created when boats were pulled by horses. Port-la-Nouvelle is home to several bike rental companies, and the “voie verte” takes you across the ponds to Narbonne (allow 2 hours for the ride). You can also simply walk along the banks of the river to your heart’s content: they’re well laid out and easily accessible to all, not far from our campsite.

What to do around the Canal du Midi?

Our campsite is ideally positioned for visiting the many tourist sites close to the Canal du Midi and the Aude coast. The nearby Etang de Leucate is an excellent playground for nautical activities, as is the Etang de Bages-Sigean, on the edge of which lies the Narbonne nautical center.

Narbonne is also a destination to consider if you are looking for cultural visits. Su patrimonio histórico lo convierte en un tesoro al aire libre, tanto en el centro de la ciudad como en las afueras, donde se encuentra la sublime abadía de Fontfroide, en la ladera de una colina.

All around the Etang de Bages-Sigean, which stretches between our campsite and Narbonne, there are numerous towns worth a visit. Gruissan, for example, is a must-see: it’s divided between the seaside resort atmosphere of its coastline and, high up, an ancient fishing village designated as one of the Most Beautiful Villages in France.

La Palme also has many facets, with the remains of its fortress, its famous Rouet beach and the exceptional panoramic views of its salt marshes. Also nestled between the sea, mountains and lakes, Sigean is a gateway to the Corbières region, and children will love its famous African wildlife park.

Picturesque villages near the campsite

The village of Bages is perfect for a stroll through shady lanes and a belvedere offering unobstructed views over the region. Peyriac-de-Mer will also surprise you with its charm and mouth-watering gastronomic specialties. Move a little further inland from the lake, and you’ll find yourself not far from the medieval town of Lagrasse, a must-see on any Occitan vacation.
